HIGH POINT, N.C. -- High Point University's president gave a gift to High Point that is expected to have a lasting impact on the community.
- $20 million check handed over
- Money will go toward building several downtown attractions
- The first project, a new stadium, is expected to be done next year
High Point University's President Dr. Nido Qubein gave a $22 million check to help projects around the city.
That money will help build not only the new downtown stadium but a children's museum, an exhibition center, as well as a park and playground.
The High Point Community Foundation is managing the money for the downtown revitalization effort.
The entire project sits on 11 and a half acres between Elm and Lindsay Streets, Gatewood Avenue and English Road.
The foundation just celebrated its 20th anniversary.
"This will in essence become our new downtown and what we're looking for is to create a downtown community that's pedestrian-friendly, safe, and the kind of place where young people want to go," stated High Point Community Foundation President Paul Lessard. "It will help us go to the next level as a town."
The new stadium is expected to be done next year, and work on the children's museum is expected to follow.
